The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is firmly opposed to culling badgers, we know from scientific evidence that culling badgers to control bovine TB has the potential to make the situation for farmers far worse. Vaccination has been long used in the management of disease and this is a low risk approach to reducing the spread of bovine TB in the badger population. A resilient badger population will therefore not pass TB to cattle nor will it catch TB from cattle.
Thanks to funding from our members, the Welsh Government and People's Postcode Lottery we have been able to start vaccinating badgers on our Castle Woods Nature Reserve in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire.
This is the start of a 5 year programme of management which we hope will demonstrate to landowners how the disease can be managed to ensure that farmed animals face reduced risk from wildlife.
